When a 15-year-old dog who has lived through a lot regains hope, because he realizes that something is definitely going on here, we notice it. We saw this change in the Old Man, too. Every time he spent time on the dog-run, he watched the opening of the gate and waited only for her. The girl finally came for him and took him with her for good—she did not disappoint him.
